Roxy Loves Our CBSD Educators!

American Education Week, November 12–16, 2018, celebrates public education, giving all Americans the opportunity to honor individuals who are making a difference in the lives of children. Public school educators take pride in welcoming students from all backgrounds, circumstances, and learning styles and providing them with the support, resources, and time to learn in a safe environment. Just like Roxy Therapy Dogs!

Each day of American Education Week will shine the spotlight on a different group of educators – from teachers, to parents, to support professionals, to substitute teachers – and highlight their role in ensuring that every child receives a quality education. Here in our CBSD community, our students and families are very fortunate to have educational professionals who go the extra mile every day to make learning fun, use new technology, and partner with Roxy Therapy Dogs to enhance their daily classroom experiences!

Our Dogs Make Special Connections

Do you know about Roxy's Student Specialized Support program? This program was developed so that Roxy therapy dogs could visit children in a variety of classes (in addition to mainstream classes) including Autistic Support, Multiple Disability Support, and Life Skills. While many of these children are non-verbal, or have limited mobility, Roxy dogs are able to form special connections with them and help them developmentally and emotionally.

Roxy teams have been supporting specialized classes in CBSD elementary schools for many years and have recently begun to support two of the high schools as well. With the number of these classes continuing to increase, it was necessary to develop a program dedicated to this population of students. Currently, Roxy teams visit Bridge Valley, Buckingham, Butler, Doyle, Groveland, Jamison, Kutz, Linden, Pine Run, Warwick, CB East High School, and CB South High School. Roxy has also been asked to recruit teams for two other classes, Butler Learning Support and Doyle Learning Support.

2018-19 marks Roxy Therapy Dogs' 14th school year in Central Bucks School District! As parents, teachers and Roxy usher in a brand new school year, we can't help but stop and think about how grateful Roxy is to the CBSD community for welcoming the therapy dog teams into over 130 classes this year (so far). This gives our teams the opportunity to comfort and support over 3,000 students each week!

This school year Roxy is also thrilled to be launching a pilot program with CB East High School to support their specialized classes, in particular the Autistic Support classes. This is the first time that these students can work with Roxy therapy dog teams at the secondary level. Students now have the opportunity to benefit developmentally, cognitively and behaviorally by interacting with a certified therapy dog.

CB East teachers tell us they are already seeing amazing results and that Roxy visits are having a very positive impact on their students! Here's to a great school year!

Roxy Around Town

On October, 13, 2018, Roxy Therapy Dogs participated in the first Pet Expo at the Ben Wilson Senior Center in Warminster, PA. Many vendors were present to provide pets and their humans with all kinds of great products! Thanks to all of the Roxy volunteers, especially the therapy teams who were helped make this a great day.

Roxy Therapy Dogs had an amazing day at the first Bucks County Book Festival on October 14. Although it was a little cool and cloudy, many book fans were out on Hamilton Street in Doylestown. Roxy's volunteers, both human and puppy, greeted all of our fans with smiles and wags. So many families and friends were interested in what Roxy does for the children in the schools, courthouse, hospital and medical group homes. Quite a few were also interested in becoming volunteers, with or without dogs - we hope to hear from them soon!

Roxy Therapy Dogs wishes you a great Thanksgiving holiday surrounded by family and friends!

The volunteers and dogs with Roxy Therapy Dogs will be celebrating Thanksgiving by being so grateful for all of the friends that they have made at schools, Doylestown Hospital, Pedia Manor homes, and the courthouse. The comfort and joy that they have brought to children in our community goes both ways!
