A Special Donation in Support of Roxy

Roxy™ Therapy Dogs is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that is able to operate on a small budget thanks to its wonderful volunteers and loyal supporters.

Hi Liza! The book recommendation was made by Wendy Maraska. We had asked her what book she would recommend to our audience and this is what she had come up with. So, not my idea at all! I reached out to the publishing company (Penguin Random House, link below) and asked if they would consider giving us a discount on the book. I explained the Roxy COE series to them and how this was a gift to our audience. At first they had offered us a 50% discount but then the other day I received a second e-mail offering me all the books for free. They donated 25 books total. Sorry, this is not a very exciting story! Maybe you can jazz it up for me?

Overview

An honest and deeply moving debut memoir about a young woman’s battle with depression and how her dog saved her life

A New York Times Bestseller

Dog Medicine simply has to be your next must-read.” —Cheryl Strayed

At twenty-two, Julie Barton collapsed on her kitchen floor in Manhattan. She was one year out of college and severely depressed. Summoned by Julie’s incoherent phone call, her mother raced from Ohio to New York and took her home.

Haunted by troubling childhood memories, Julie continued to sink into suicidal depression. Psychiatrists, therapists, and family tried to intervene, but nothing reached her until the day she decided to do one hopeful thing: adopt a Golden Retriever puppy she named Bunker. Dog Medicine captures the anguish of depression, the slow path to recovery, the beauty of forgiveness, and the astonishing ways animals can help heal even the most broken hearts and minds.

I decided to donate money to the therapy dogs because I think it is important for children who can’t afford therapy dogs to get them, so they can get mentally better or feel better with the therapy dog by their side. I hope everyone had a merry Christmas, happy new year and happy kwanza (hopefully you had a happy Hanakuh too!)

Leila and her own dog, Mira

Leila’s mom, Lachele, tells us, “Leila enjoys playing her flute, dancing, baking, and spending time with our dog, Mira. Her favorite subjects are reading and writing. Leila loves donating to Roxy Therapy Dogs!”

Roxy thanks Leila for her support and love. Who knows? Maybe one day Leila will grow up to have her own therapy dog and become a volunteer for Roxy! We would love that.
