Roxy Therapy Dogs Offer New Insights into the World of Autism
Roxy Therapy Dogs, a recognized leader in canine assisted therapy programs for children, is marking its 15 Year Anniversary by launching an innovative, advanced training series for both Roxy therapy teams and other interested community members. Each topic in this Roxy Certificate of Excellence Series will deal with insights and specialized skills designed to make Roxy therapy teams, as well as parents, teachers, healthcare providers and even legal professionals, more effective at helping the children and families they serve.
For 15 years, Roxy has been setting the benchmark for therapy dogs comforting and inspiring children all the while working towards this unique, educational initiative. “Our new Certificate of Excellence Series has been in the planning stages for two years. We have gained a lot of support from people and organizations both in and outside of our community and are so incredibly excited to be able to introduce this initiative as we celebrate our 15th Anniversary milestone,” said Roxy president, Sharon Fleck.
The first offering in the series on March 22, 2020 will focus on Insights Into the Child with Autism. Presenters include Catherine Wallace, M.S., a psychotherapist in the community mental health field and an adjunct professor at Delaware Valley University. Mrs. Wallace focuses on developmental disabilities, childhood psychotherapy, and adolescent psychology. She currently works as a part of the Penn Foundation’s Mental Health Outpatient Services with children, adolescents, and adults across the autism spectrum. She will help us better understand what autism is. Cory Thompson, Autistic Support Teacher at Central Bucks High School East, and Keira Thompson, M.A.ED in Special Education, Autism endorsed and ASD Teacher at Buckingham, will share insights from the classroom that will help handlers and dogs. Jeanelle and Derrick Morgan, known to many as the owners of A Monkey’s Uncle in Doylestown, are the parents of a child with Autism and a leading local advocate for children on the spectrum. As parents, they bring a unique perspective to the group.
Insights Into a Child with Autism is designed in two parts –first, a lecture will take place on Sunday, March 22nd from 9:30 AM to 1 PM at Moumgis Auditorium in the Student Center at Delaware Valley University, 700 East Butler Avenue in Doylestown.
